Blessed Are The Forgiven (Part 3)
“Therefore, let all the godly pray to you while there is still time, that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment.” Psalm 32:6 New Living Translation
Matthew 7:6 says, “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces” (NIV). In other words, some things are so precious that you must be selective with whom you share it. Pearls symbolize something of great value. When I was a child I would visit my grandparents’ farm in South Carolina – trust me, pigs don’t know the difference between pearls and mud. They have no discernment as to the value of what’s before them.
We are not to be live like that. One of the most precious commodities that we have is our time. Ephesians 5:16 exhorts us to redeem, or make the best use of our time, because the days are evil. Christians must apply the wisdom that God supplies in order to actively take advantage of every opportunity to do good.
What you neglect to do, is just as important as what you do. Of the ten virgins in Matthew 25, five virgins, described as “foolish”, were not prepared to meet the bridegroom. “The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them” (Matthew 25:3 NIV). These lamps required regular refilling. So their failure to bring oil demonstrated their lack of preparation to take advantage of the opportunity. And the consequences were grave. “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut” (Matthew 25:10 NIV).
Psalm 32:6 encourages us to seek the Lord while He may be found. We can start now to cultivate a lifestyle of prayer and communion with God, so that when the heat of crisis arises we don’t have to offer up prayers of desperation, hoping they reach their target. While there are many things demanding our time, interest, and energy, we must endeavor to focus on what’s most important, and leverage our time for the greatest possible benefit.
