"Logos" (A Tailor Made Word)

"Logos" (A Tailor Made Word)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (St. John 1:1)

John whose name means "the Lord has been gracious" was the son Zebedee.  He was nicknamed by Jesus (along with his brother James) as the "Sons of Thunder." These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder)." Mark 3:16, 17.  They probably got this name because of their bold and hotheaded style.  John had a violent temper and often flew off the handle.  One such case was in the book of Luke 9:52-54.  Jesus sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?  Although John started off as a hotheaded son of thunder, he eventually became a loving son of God.

The Gospel of John is the fourth gospel in the catalog of the New Testament.  John's gospel is a story about the life of Jesus, and can be divided into four parts: The Prologue or introduction (1:1-18) which is a hymn identifying Jesus as the "Logos" or Living Word of God, the Book of Signs (1:19-12:50) which recounts Jesus' public ministry, and includes the signs worked by Jesus, as well as some of his teachings, the Passion narrative (13-20) which focuses on the Last Supper , Jesus' arrest, crucifixion, burial, and resurrection and the Epilogue.(John 21) which records a resurrection appearance of Jesus to the disciples in Galilee. Of the four gospels, John presents the highest academic study of Jesus Christ, describing Him as the Logos who was in "the beginning" or "the ultimate source of all things".  John also taught at length about Jesus' identity as savior, and declaring Him to be God, Only in John does Jesus talk more about himself, and the things He shared with the disciples only.  Here Jesus' public ministry consists largely of miracles not found in the other gospels, including raising Lazarus from the dead. Also in John's gospel, Jesus; not his message, becomes the object of worship.  Elements such as parables, exorcisms, and possibly the Second Coming are not found in John as is the other gospels.

We can be encouraged by Johns writing as believers to have a deeper appreciation of who Jesus Christ is, and of how we can know and experience Him today.  Be assured that no matter where you are in your walk with Christ, the Word of God, the Logos can be easily understood. There can be just enough in the Word of God for you to walk through if you are a babe in Christ and there is more than enough revelation for you to swim in for the more "experienced" Christian.  Remember, God has a word tailor made just for you.
